Power from Tower
The Tower Links staff team of Gary Constable, Simon Payne, Andy Stewart and Ray Arcala proved too strong for the members in the End of Season scramble on June the 11th as they tore the course apart shooting a superb 56.38 nett. The colourful quartet started like tour stars in the blistering conditions as they birdied their opening 5 holes, pared their next 5 holes and holed 6 more birdies over the 8 holes that remained.
Things did get a little shaky during the mid section of the round for Payne as the effects of dehydration started playing havoc with his game and mental well being. However, there is no I in team so with his clear headed team members minds firmly fixed on the task ahead they managed to get the job done without the help of Payne who was in a virtual vegetable like Trans by rounds end.
Andy Jubber, Ross Burgmann, Troy Richardson and Dan Greenfield were awarded 1st place honours on default with a score of 56.68 nett as the Power from Tower honourably stepped down to give Big Dan Greenfield one lasting memory before he leaves our shores. This foursome was suspect to say the least, we had Jubber wearing Austin Powers strides and Troy the bandito Richardson sporting a ‘’legal’’ but somewhat inflated handicap. We have to give them their due though; they did play some wonderful golf to post a gross score of 7 under par, 65 leaving them only slightly behind the big boy’s total.
Despite having Terry Belton in their team, Yuki, Matt Jones and Clarkey waltzed into Second position after firing a quality 60.1 nett. Not trying to be too disrespectful to Terry ......but his game has been dreadful of late with his handicap rising quicker than a Sherpa on Everest. That aside, the team played very consistently as they played the front and back nines in identical fashion, that being 33 strokes a piece. They did however post a rare bogey on hole number 10, one can only surmise that they were forced to take one of Terry’s compulsory 3 drives.....
The married couples of Risto and Nikka Painio and Johan and Manilyn Buxmann found themselves all alone in third place on 60.9 nett. Both couples have had a fairly solid season with Manilyn improving her handicap considerably while her playing partners have featured several times at the prize table over the year. The guys and gals put on quite a performance on the course, going out in a 1 under par 35 on the tougher nine and coming home in style with a very popular score of 3 under par, 33.
The day culminated with the 2009/10 Tower Links End of Season Awards ceremony where all the winners of our various honour board events and other major competition winners received their trophy’s for their achievements throughout the season.
